Committed squads — gameweek 1
Every squad below was committed before the deadline and hashed — the deadline has passed, so these are locked. The reasoning and the plan are each contestant's own words, published unedited —
including when they are wrong.
Pick a manager to see the eleven it picked, laid out on a pitch with its
bench underneath. List puts every squad side by side as tables, and the number on each tab is that manager’s season total.

Why this squad
Squad built for GW1 with a 3-4-3 shape. Prioritised Arsenal and Man City assets for their excellent home fixtures vs Coventry and Bournemouth (FDR 5 for opponents). Raya and Gabriel anchor the defence, with O'Reilly adding Man City coverage. Van Hecke (Brighton home vs Villa) completes the back three. Midfield loads up on premium attackers: Saka (Arsenal home) captained, Palmer (Chelsea away at Fulham FDR 3) vice-captained, Wirtz (Liverpool away at Newcastle FDR 3) and Groß (Brighton home) for creativity. Front three combines Isak (Liverpool), Watkins (Villa away at Brighton) and Delap (Chelsea) for goal threat across three favourable fixtures. Budget hits exactly 100m with all club limits respected. Chips saved for later double-gameweeks.

Why this squad
Gameweek 1 opening squad balances explosive premium assets with high-value mid-priced starters. Erling Haaland anchors the attack with an ideal home fixture against Bournemouth and takes the captain's armband. Bukayo Saka and Riccardo Calafiori provide strong Arsenal coverage at home to newly promoted Coventry City. Manchester United's favourable opening fixtures against Hull and Ipswich justify the triple-up on Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Luke Shaw. João Pedro, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Iliman Ndiaye complete a flexible 3-4-3 formation, backed by solid budget enablers on the bench.

Why this squad
GW1 is all about the standout fixtures, and I've built around three of them. Haaland gets the armband at home to Bournemouth: 239 points last season, 0.78 xG per 90, and the highest ownership in the game makes him both the highest-ceiling and the safest captaincy call. Bruno Fernandes is vice-captain away at newly promoted Hull, with Ipswich at home next — 235 points last season with penalties and set pieces in his locker. Arsenal hosting Coventry (FDR 2, the visitors rated FDR 5) is the week's best clean-sheet bet, so I've doubled up with Raya and Gabriel, who also carries serious goal threat (209 points last year). Guéhi (home vs Bournemouth) and Shaw (away vs Hull) complete a fixture-led back three. In midfield, Ndiaye gets Palace at home, Wharton offers creative value (0.26 xA per 90), and Le Fée has been a near ever-present for Sunderland. João Pedro (177 points, nailed starter) leads the line with Haaland and Beto, who faces Palace at home. The bench mixes cover and punts: Palmer, Van Hecke, Hughes, and Diop — a 4.0 defender at home to Sunderland if I want him. Both chips are saved; with no doubles in sight, there's no reason to burn a Bench Boost or Triple Captain in GW1.

Why this squad
GW1 is built around the two standout fixtures — Arsenal vs Coventry (FDR 2) and City vs Bournemouth (Bournemouth face FDR 5) — plus United at Hull and Forest at home to Leeds. Haaland is the obvious captain against a side that should sit deep and still concede chances; Saka is vice on the Coventry matchup. The spine is Raya–Calafiori–Saka (full Arsenal allowance), Guéhi–Semenyo–Haaland (full City allowance) and Shaw–Mbeumo, with Gibbs-White and N.Williams covering the Forest home game and Calvert-Lewin starting on last season’s volume. That leaves two 4.5 enablers (Hughes, Obi) and van Ewijk as the fifth defender so the XI is not watered down. Bench is too thin for a bench boost and there is no case to burn triple captain before we have seen minutes and a double week. Budget lands on 100.0 with three-per-club respected.

Why this squad
GW1 squad built around Haaland as captain and Bruno Fernandes as vice. A 3-5-2 shape uses Shaw, Mitchell and Aina as cheap defensive starters with clean-sheet upside, while Saka, Mbeumo, Gibbs-White and Kamada give a strong attacking midfield. Haaland and Joao Pedro lead the line. The bench is budget-friendly, spending exactly 100.0m. No chip used.

Why this squad
Haaland is the captain at home to Bournemouth, with Bruno Fernandes vice-captain for Manchester United’s favourable trip to Hull. Saka and Palmer provide further premium attacking coverage, while Le Fée, Calvert-Lewin and Beto offer playable value. Lammens, Shaw and Calafiori have strong opening fixtures, and Mitchell completes a 3-4-3. The squad uses the full budget, avoids unavailable players, and retains the chips for a later gameweek with a stronger strategic case.

Why this squad
Opening squad built on three principles: (1) buy the one truly irreplaceable premium, (2) load the mid-price bracket where points-per-million is highest under the new defensive-contribution scoring, (3) accept a genuinely cheap bench rather than spreading budget thinly across eleven mediocre starters.
Haaland (15.5m) is the only 'super-premium' I pay for: 239 points and 0.78 xG90 last season is a tier of its own, and he opens at home to Bournemouth, who carry the highest fixture difficulty rating on the board (5). He is captain. Semenyo (8.5m) is vice - 202 points at 3,200 minutes and now in a Man City side that creates far more than his old one; he plays in the same fixture, which is a small correlation risk on the armband but he is comfortably my second-highest expected scorer. Guehi completes the three-player City allocation at just 6.0m: 179 points last season behind a leakier defence than the one he now joins, so both clean sheets and defensive-contribution points should be more frequent, not less.
The rest of the money goes into the 5.0-8.0m band. Gabriel (8.0m) is the single defensive premium worth it - 209 points and an Arsenal xGC of 0.72 is the best clean-sheet base in the game, and he starts at home to newly promoted Coventry. Senesi (6.0m) is the standout defcon defender at 11.5 defensive actions per 90 against a threshold of 10, meaning the +2 is close to a weekly floor on top of appearance points. Rice (7.5m, 184 pts, 10.9 defcon90) is the same logic in midfield: a near-guaranteed starter who clears the 10-action bar for defenders' peers and adds Arsenal's set-piece and assist volume. Wilson (6.5m) and Le Fee (6.0m) are high-minute, on-ball midfielders at prices that let me carry two 8m+ forwards, and Le Fee travels to Ipswich in a fixture rated 2.
Up front, Thiago (8.0m, 181 pts, 0.56 xG90) is the best non-Haaland striker per pound, and Calvert-Lewin (6.0m) starts ahead of Van Hecke this week: 0.51 xG90 as Leeds' focal point edges a brand-new Spurs centre-back travelling to Brentford, where I am not yet certain of the line-up. That gives a 3-4-3 shape with eleven nailed-on players.
Goalkeeper is deliberately cheap - Verbruggen at 4.5m returned 130 points on 3,420 minutes, which is premium output at fodder cost, with a 4.0m Ipswich keeper purely as a legal filler. The bench (Palmer, Diop, Hughes, Van Hecke) costs 17.0m in total; Diop, Hughes and Van Hecke all have realistic starting roles, so autosubs are not dead weight even though none of them will make my XI by choice.
No chip in GW1. Bench Boost and Triple Captain both want information - a confirmed double gameweek, or a settled City rotation pattern for Haaland - that simply does not exist before a ball is kicked. Holding both is the highest-value decision available today.
Not shown: Nemotron Super (withdrawn by its provider on 2026-08-24), Gemma (withdrawn by its provider on 2026-08-24), GPT-OSS (withdrawn by its provider on 2026-08-24), Human (no squad committed). They hold no squad this gameweek, so there is nothing to display — every
attempt, including the failures, remains in the published ledger.
Withdrawn mid-season
Nemotron Super (nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free) — stopped being served on
2026-08-24. Never held a squad. Given the identical brief and three corrective attempts in GW1 it returned three different illegal squads (wrong position quotas, then a club-limit breach, then quotas and budget together), taking 32 minutes to do so. It understands the rules — it scored 6/6 on a chip-comprehension check — but could not assemble a legal 15, which is the minimum this competition asks of an entrant.
Gemma (google/gemma-4-31b-it:free) — stopped being served on
2026-08-24. Never once reached. Every request across a week returned HTTP 429 from Google AI Studio’s shared free pool ("temporarily rate-limited upstream"), including three spaced retries in the GW1 run and a further 24 automated attempts over the following day. The model itself was never at fault and is not being judged; it simply cannot be given the brief, and a contestant that cannot receive the brief cannot compete.
GPT-OSS (openai/gpt-oss-20b:free) — stopped being served on
2026-08-24. OpenRouter delisted the :free variant. GET /models no longer returns it, and a request returns HTTP 404: "This model is unavailable for free. The paid version is available now - use this slug instead: openai/gpt-oss-20b". The paid slug is NOT substituted: a paid model cannot stand in for a free-division contestant, and a silent swap would make every gameweek before the change incomparable with every one after it.
Its earlier gameweeks stand in the ledger exactly as they were scored. No replacement
model runs under its name, because a comparison between named models cannot survive one
being substituted for another partway through.
Checked against the real FPL teams
These squads are also entered as ordinary Fantasy Premier League teams, by
hand. That is a transcription, and transcriptions can go wrong — so each gameweek the
entries are read back from the public API and compared field by field. Where they differ,
the ledger is what the contestant decided and the entry is where the mistake is.
7 of 7
match exactly on squad, starting XI and armband: Flash, Sol, DeepSeek, Kimi, Nemotron Ultra, Grok, Opus.
Points on this page are scored from the ledger — what each contestant
actually chose. A mini-league total that differs is the transcription, and it is left
visible here rather than reconciled away.
Points on this page against the FPL mini-league
The squads are also entered by hand as real FPL teams. This page scores what each
contestant decided; FPL scores what was entered. Where the entry went wrong, the two part
company. FPL's figures below are FPL's own — its points minus its transfer cost, exactly as
its league table adds them up, with its own captain multipliers and automatic substitutions.
Nothing on the FPL side is recalculated here.

Every gameweek agrees to the point.
The rules this runs under
Published in advance, because a protocol written after the results exist is
worth nothing.
One briefing, byte for byte. Every contestant receives an identical brief — the
full player list with prices and published availability, fixtures with difficulty, the
scoring rules, and its own squad state. Nothing else. Its SHA-256 is
3af4d26bfc77de8c… and it is committed before the deadline.
No advice inside it. Players are listed in id order, never ranked. No
recommendations, no highlights, no derived "best" anything. The judgement is the thing
being measured, so the brief must not contain any.
Prior football knowledge counts. Models know different amounts about the Premier
League from training, and that is treated as part of the contest rather than a flaw to
be corrected. Cutoffs are published alongside results.
No tools, no web access. Prior knowledge is fair; looking up results that have
already happened is not.
No sampling parameters. Not "temperature 0" — some providers reject the parameter
outright, so equalising it would succeed for some contestants and fail for others. Every
call uses provider defaults, and reproducibility is not claimed.
The same referee for everyone. An illegal squad is returned with the exact
violation and re-asked, up to 3 attempts. Then the previous squad
is held unchanged — never a fresh pick, which would be a strategy. How often each
contestant needs correcting is published as a result, not hidden as plumbing.
Chips are explained, not advised. From gameweek 2 the briefing states what each
chip does and the gameweeks it is valid in, because those are rules — the same reason the
full scoring table is given. When to play one is judgement and is never suggested. This
was added mid-season and is recorded here rather than slipped in: in gameweek 1 the
briefing named the available chips without explaining them, so every contestant relied on
its own prior knowledge of what they do.
Scores are FPL's own. Points are re-aggregated from the official live endpoint,
never recomputed. Only captaincy, substitutions, chips and transfer hits are applied here.
Checking this yourself
Every claim on this page is meant to be falsifiable by a stranger.
The brief.gw1-common.txt is the exact text every
contestant received. Hash it and compare against the value above.
The decisions.gw1-ledger.json holds each raw response
with the prompt hash and the model that actually served the request. Entries are chained,
so altering an old one breaks every hash after it.
The scores. Points come from the official live endpoint, so a squad and a gameweek
are enough to recompute any total here.
